Green Future
I’ll be honest with you: the theme for our Singapore Tatler Magazine April 2023 issue, sustainability (chosen because Earth Day falls on the 22nd of the month), is something I often think about with no small amount of trepidation, mainly because it’s such a beast of a subject.
Sustainability covers an entire world of eco‑friendly and responsible practices, and we wanted to make sure we tackled the subject in a meaningful way, so we reached out to some of the best and brightest minds in the Tatler community and the world to show how we can all start crafting a more sustainable path, be it through baby steps or big ones.
For our cover feature, we speak with Benjamin Swan, co‑founder of Sustenir and founder of Beco Ventures, who shares his vision for improving food sustainability through innovation. He talks about the global food crisis and how his mission to grow leafy greens led him to develop high‑tech systems to replicate and improve nature’s growing processes. Swan’s work is testament to the power of technology in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing our world today.
We also interview R Raghunathan, CEO of WWF‑Singapore, who gives insights on sustainable finance in the region. With his experience in the finance industry, Raghunathan highlights some of the unique focus areas in Asia and how WWF‑Singapore is harnessing the power of this sector to achieve its climate and nature ambitions.
Then there is Lia Nicholson, head of sustainability at Terrascope, a climate tech company headquartered in Singapore that provides data, analytics and digital tools to help large companies measure their carbon footprint and decarbonise their business operations and supply chains. She discusses how companies can utilise carbon management tools to move towards a net‑zero world, and shares her experience as a United Nations climate negotiator for the Alliance of Small Island States and how she is focused on supporting companies in their journey towards a 1.5C global warming pathway In the Style section, we interview the designers from Rotate, a sustainable Scandinavian fashion brand, as well as other leaders in the fashion industry who are
championing sustainability. These impactful individuals fill us in on how the fashion industry can become greener through circular practices as well as eco‑friendly materials and production.
We also explore responsible travel in the Maldives and highlight hotels around the world that are making a positive impact on local and indigenous communities. Sustainability is a big topic and the prospect of trying to go green can seem daunting. But the very simple truth is that it’s always better to do something—no matter how small—than nothing at all. We hope this magazine issue inspires you to take your first step towards building a greener future for a world that desperately needs it.
