Welcome at Practical Horseman Magazine Spring 2023 Issue
When Practical Horseman Magazine first appeared in January of 1973 as an outgrowth of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association’s magazine, The Pennsylvania Horse, it covered the breeding, care, feeding and training of racehorses as well as sporthorses. But its focus as your link to the leaders in training, riding and horse care was there from the start. Since then, our mission has always been to make your life with horses better.
To celebrate, in each issue this year, we’re taking one of the four disciplines we cover and showcasing how PH has covered the evolution of that sport over the last 50 years. This includes changes in terms of safety, competition and training approaches as well as the leaders of the sport. In this issue we’re highlighting eventing, so turn to page 30 for a fun look back.
This is also a great opportunity for me to thank all of the experts who have shared their knowledge since PH started. Whenever we’ve called (or emailed or texted) to ask for advice on a topic, riders, trainers, grooms, veterinarians and so many others have sat for an interview, demonstrated a riding technique or explained the latest equine health research.
There are so many wonderful people who have worked with PH over the years that I can’t begin to name them all. But one who has been on my mind a lot lately is the great Jim Wofford. As many of you know, Jim passed away in February. The loss is enormous. For me, I was in awe of the way he thought about training horses, whether it was how to break down introducing a ditch to a young horse or how a dip in the terrain in front of a cross-country fence would affect the horse. He was also so dedicated to all of you. He often forwarded me his responses to emails from readers who wrote to him.
And finally, I want to thank you, whether you’ve been with us for the full 50 years or are a new friend. As we’ve worked on these pages over the years, it’s always been with you and your horses in our minds and hearts.
Take care.
