Welcome to Robb Report Singapore magazine March 2023 issue

ZEN. EVEN SAYING the word aloud, one gets a sense of its sweet, satisfying lucidity. Although its meaning has been most eloquently – and definitively – expressed by the Japanese, Zen, in thought and practice all about the attainment of clarity and peace, is a universally desired luxury.
So, where and how do we seek Zen and its myriad manifestations? In this issue dedicated to contemplation and contentment, we head to its source: Japan. For a start, we delve into two areas of traditional craft – horology and whisky making – that demand rigorous training and time to master. Although watchmaking and whisky distilling have their origins in Switzerland and Scotland, respectively, the Japanese masters featured within these pages have adopted and elevated the crafts with their unique takes; honed, no less, by Zen-inspired attributes of patience and peace. In doing so, the art they have created inspires introspection.
In our exploration of the country’s spirit of reflective calm, we also uncover expansive luxury abodes in Niseko and Hokkaido. Set against sweeping alpine views, they epitomise comfort and quietude. Closer to home, we seek out Japan-inspired experiences, from high fashion to fine dining, to satiate our appetite for its wonders that are right at our doorstep.
Away from Japan, Laguna National Golf Resort Club, Singapore’s incomparable golf and country club that graces this issue’s cover, has been a place of respite for golf enthusiasts and vacationers alike.
There is just something magical about the iconic club’s world-famous golf courses and its recently opened wellness-themed resort that draw guests back time and again. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, we reacquaint ourselves with Laguna National Golf Resort Club’s enduring appeal.
It is true: peace is to be pursued. But oftentimes, it is also right where we are. Will you find it as you ease into a lounge chair that gently cradles
you after a long day? In your favourite music that comes out of a finely tuned speaker set-up? Or, perhaps, in something larger than yourself, such as answering a call to contribute to philanthropiccauses? These tiny nudges toward a Zen-like state of mind are within our grasp – and these pages.
Best of all, we have more power than we think to reach out and embrace it.
